Dorothy Francis Picnic

This past week, a few friends from the New West community attended the annual memorial picnic for Dorothy Maquabeak Francis.

Dorothy Francis (1912-1990), a member of the Saulteau First Nation, was the founder of the first Indian Friendship Centre in Canada, and a recipient of the Order of Canada for her work promoting and revitalizing indigenous culture. She became a Baha’i in 1960.

On the 12th of May 2019, friends and family of Dorothy Francis came together in Queens Park to honour and remember the life of this extraordinary woman. The day included enjoying food together, singing, drumming and prayers at Maquabeak’s totem pole.
